standing waves - 2006/04/27 15:19
When you put a subwoofer in a box you get bass out the front and standing waves in the box. These waves are 180 degrees out of phase with the bass so if you don't trap them they will come together and cancil each other out. Thats why you put subs in a box and why if you port the box it has to be correct to have good results. Some boxes have polyfill in them this is to help break up standing waves, baffles do the same thing.
